They have their hands full these days at the Protection and Rescue Service in Rožaj

They deliver water to remote mountain villages

The ice wave that affected the north of the country brought the local services that take care of the passability of the roads to the mountain villages, as well as the Protection and Rescue Service, full of work. Due to the large amount of snow and drift created by the stormy wind, complete machinery is on the ground for the third day in a row and they manage to keep the roads passable, and the members of the Protection and Rescue Service are literally engaged 24 hours a day in delivering drinking water to the inhabitants of the village where the freezing of numerous springs, water pipes and household installations.
Secretary of the Secretariat for Spatial Planning and Communal Affairs, Ešef Husić said that despite the difficulties they encounter, the roads to all 66 settlements in this municipality are passable.
When it comes to water supply to the villagers who were left without water due to the freezing of the installations, the vehicles of the Protection and Rescue Service were engaged in that area. According to the words Nuradin Agović, head of the Protection Service, the temperature in the municipality of Rožaj has dropped to 25 degrees below zero in recent days.
In such conditions, we encountered the freezing of the water pumps on the vehicles as well as the cisterns, because we do not have heating in the garages. With the utmost efforts, we managed to break the ice and heat the pumps in order to keep the situation regular. When leaving the cisterns from the garage to the place of intervention, we used flashlights to thaw the ice - said Agović, pointing out that many households, especially in rural areas, were left without drinking water due to extremely low temperatures.
- This phenomenon was widespread in local villages. Most of the frozen springs and water supply and household installations were in the stretch from Čokrli - Besnik - Bać - Jablanica. The water pipes also froze in Kamenuša and Lučice. We went to meet all the households from which we received an appeal for help and delivered water to them, and we continue to do so - points out Agović and emphasizes that their struggle with natural disasters continues.
In addition to the lack of water during the ice wave, we intervened to suppress the fire, which appeared on individual residential buildings and in one case on a social building. Thanks to the quick intervention, more material damage was prevented - concludes Agović.
