Population

The municipality of Rožaj occupies an area of 432 km2, in which, according to data from 2011, about 23,000 inhabitants live. Rožaje is the only municipality in Montenegro characterized by a distinct demographic youth. The average age of the population is 31.7 years. In the city, the inhabitants of the Islamic faith predominate, numbering close to 95%. Of that number, 89% are Bosniaks and 5% Albanians, while about 3.5% are Serbs and slightly more than 1.5% are Montenegrins.

The reason for the too small increase in the population in the twentieth century in the municipality of Rožaje, in relation to the birth rate and its demographic youth, lies in the continuous emigration of the population, and on several occasions it was of greater intensity: in 1914, 1924 and 1992.

It is estimated that outside the municipality of Rožaje there are more inhabitants of this area than there are in the municipality itself. From this region, the population most often emigrated to Turkey, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Macedonia, Kosovo and Metohija, and more recently to Western European countries: Germany, Luxembourg, Switzerland, France...

According to the list from 2011. the municipality has 22,964 inhabitants.
